Psalm 42:5

'Why, my soul, are you downcast?

   Why so disturbed within me?'

The tragedy of Grenfell Tower leaves us, as Her majesty the Queen has said, in a sombre mood. Those closer to the disaster have experienced the horror of the fire, the deep sorrow for loved ones lost and injured, and, for some, great anger against those responsible.

Is there any comfort or hope to be found in God?

David describes the state of his soul several times in this Psalm and Psalm 43. He was always honest to bring the concerns of his heart to God: 9'I say to God my Rock, 'Why have you forgotten me? Why must O go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?'

10'My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, 'Where is your God?'

He felt the injustice of one who desired to serve God, yet was constantly oppressed by his enemies: 'Vindicate me, my God, and plead my cause against an unfaithful nation. rescue me from those who are deceitful and wicked.' (Ps 43:1)

But David had a true understanding of God, even if he struggled to accept the immediate circumstances he found himself in.

'Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell. Then I will go to the alter of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God.' (43:3)

David always brought his praise and worship to God whatever had befallen him.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?

Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God,

for I will yet praise him,

my Saviour and my God.

We like to wish people well on specific occasions. Many years ago these comments were based in Christianity. Good bye was really 'God be with you'.

When we introduce God into the sentiment we are really offering a prayer that God will bless the person we are praying for. 'May God bless you' carries far more purpose and desire than a simple 'Have a nice day.'

The Bible tells us that 'The prayer of a righteous an is powerful and effective' (James 5:16). That means our good wishes for someone, if actually based on a prayer for them, is of far greater value than a casual greeting.

So let's remember to pray for all those we have cause to greet or pass on wishes to; and why not tell them we are praying for them!

What does the Bible have to say about treating 'Beggars'? Well have a listen in our current series 'The Kingdom of Heaven' to hear what was spoken about this very subject by Steve Adams on Sunday 8th December by clicking here.

Wise Sayings

After a very long and boring sermon the congregation filed out of the church saying nothing to the preacher. Towards the end of the line was a thoughtful person who always commented on the sermons. "Today your sermon reminded me of the peace and love of God!" The preacher was thrilled. "No-one has ever said anything like that about my preaching before. Tell me why."
"Well - it reminded me of the Peace of God because it passed all understanding and the Love of God because it endured forever!"
