Ecclesiastes 2:1

'I said to myself, 'Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.' But that also proved to be meaningless.'

The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon, a man of great wisdom. He took the opportunity afforded by his wealth and status to study all aspects of life. His writings provide a commentary on life, its values and its meaning and could have been written for today, such is their relevance.

Solomon pursued pleasure: 'I denied myself nothing my eyes desired.' This is the lottery dream people live for. For some it would be playing golf every day, or travelling the world, or indulging in a favorite pastime. But his verdict was that it proved to be meaningless.

We live in an age, especially in the West, when we have more leisure time than ever before. How do we spend our free time? Do we say that we've earned the right to do whatever we want, resources permitting? How many of us say, 'When I retire...'?

Jesus told the parable of the Rich Fool, a man who had great wealth and said he would take life easy, eat, drink and be merry. But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' (Luke 12:20)

Jesus put it another way in Matthew 6:33: 'Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.' He was actually talking about the necessites of life, not the luxuries.

Even then we should not worry about things like food and clothes, but instead seek God's purposes. He will provide what we need. Paul wrote to the church at Philippi: 'I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage that I may gain Christ.'

Many seek a life of pleasure, but Solomom soon realised that it was actually fleeting and meaningless in the broader context of knowing God.

We like to wish people well on specific occasions. Many years ago these comments were based in Christianity. Good bye was really 'God be with you'.

When we introduce God into the sentiment we are really offering a prayer that God will bless the person we are praying for. 'May God bless you' carries far more purpose and desire than a simple 'Have a nice day.'

The Bible tells us that 'The prayer of a righteous an is powerful and effective' (James 5:16). That means our good wishes for someone, if actually based on a prayer for them, is of far greater value than a casual greeting.

So let's remember to pray for all those we have cause to greet or pass on wishes to; and why not tell them we are praying for them!

What does the Bible have to say about treating 'Beggars'? Well have a listen in our current series 'The Kingdom of Heaven' to hear what was spoken about this very subject by Steve Adams on Sunday 8th December by clicking here.

Wise Sayings

After a very long and boring sermon the congregation filed out of the church saying nothing to the preacher. Towards the end of the line was a thoughtful person who always commented on the sermons. "Today your sermon reminded me of the peace and love of God!" The preacher was thrilled. "No-one has ever said anything like that about my preaching before. Tell me why."
"Well - it reminded me of the Peace of God because it passed all understanding and the Love of God because it endured forever!"
