Psalm 60:12

'With God we will gain the victory.'

The battles we face are rarely physical ones. Paul said 'Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Eph 6:2)

We are therefore in great need of God's support as the spiriual realm is not one we are familiar with. It is a dnagerous place and requires the full armour of God as Paul describes in Ephesians 6.

Most importantly, we can be certain, as David writes here, that we are on the victory side. The old chorus reminds us:

On the victory side, on the victory side,

No foe can daunt me no fear can haunt me, on the victory side,

On the victory side, on the victory side,

With Christ within, the fight we'll win, on the victory side.

This Psalm is set against a great victory David experienced - David enquired of the Lord. 'Shall I go and attack the Philistines?

Will you deliver them into my hands?'

The Lord answered him, 'Go, for I will surely deleiver the Philistines into your hands.'

So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, 'As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.' (2 Samuel 5;19)

When we look to the Lord for guidance, and are obedient to his command, we will have the victory.

We like to wish people well on specific occasions. Many years ago these comments were based in Christianity. Good bye was really 'God be with you'.

When we introduce God into the sentiment we are really offering a prayer that God will bless the person we are praying for. 'May God bless you' carries far more purpose and desire than a simple 'Have a nice day.'

The Bible tells us that 'The prayer of a righteous an is powerful and effective' (James 5:16). That means our good wishes for someone, if actually based on a prayer for them, is of far greater value than a casual greeting.

So let's remember to pray for all those we have cause to greet or pass on wishes to; and why not tell them we are praying for them!

What does the Bible have to say about treating 'Beggars'? Well have a listen in our current series 'The Kingdom of Heaven' to hear what was spoken about this very subject by Steve Adams on Sunday 8th December by clicking here.

Wise Sayings

After a very long and boring sermon the congregation filed out of the church saying nothing to the preacher. Towards the end of the line was a thoughtful person who always commented on the sermons. "Today your sermon reminded me of the peace and love of God!" The preacher was thrilled. "No-one has ever said anything like that about my preaching before. Tell me why."
"Well - it reminded me of the Peace of God because it passed all understanding and the Love of God because it endured forever!"
